The first iRail Summer of code started as a 3 week programme, gathering 6 enthusiastic students to work in the Hackerspace in Ghent during the summer of 2011. The goal: work on four projects with three teams and develop cool stuff!

Gentse Feesten App

On the 15th of July 2011 the city of Ghent provided open data about the Gentse Feesten events. To celebrate this, the iSoc11 students decided to code an HTML5 application for smartphones. With this app, you could easily look up what events are going on or starting soon, close to where you are. The students tried to get the app functionable as soon as possible and just minutes before the Gentse Feesten started, there was a first version online at gentsefeesten.irail.be This was the foundation for a further development of the current Gentse Feesten App.
The Datatank
The DataTank started as a lightweight data publishing platform written in PHP. Its purpose is to open up data without taking over control of the data. The true use for end-users of The DataTank is that they can access static files, such as CSV, XLS, SHP, etc. through a RESTful API built on those data resources. App developers won’t have to bother about downloading that darn Excel file over and over again, parsing it and using it in their app.
Be Trains
In 2011 the iRail team was very proud that its BeTrains application was available on Android for more than a year, with a lot of happy users even preferring it above the official NMBS Android version. Having experienced all this positive feedback from the users, they all felt the need to make the app available for the iPhone-platform as well. During iSoc11 a they created the iPhone app which contained a chat feature on top of the route planner
Kadee!

Bits of Love had come up with the idea and a mock-up for Kadee! during Apps for Ghent. It was an app that helps out moms and dads in Ghent by giving them information about where they can play and go with there kids. The app was divided in three parts (events - places - troubles) which were build in a HTML5 framework during iSoc11. The combination of multiple datasets suchs as Ghent Locations, UIT, Ghent Sanitair, etc... made it a location-based app that informs parent about ongoing events, playgrounds and where to ask for help in case of trouble.
